Adult Recommendations

What are the rules for recommending adults for membership in the Order of the Arrow?

There are several steps that must be met in order for an adult to become a member of the Order of the Arrow:

  1. The troop MUST hold a unit election, and at least one youth MUST be elected. If a troop does not elect at least one youth, it cannot recommend an adult.
  2. The adult(s) to be recommended must meet the same camping requirements as youth, and must be a currently registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
  3. The adult must be at least 21 years of age. Anyone under the age of 21 must meet the youth requirements for election, including having earned the First Class or higher rank, and must be elected by the youth of his troop.
  4. The troop committee must fill out the Adult Recommendation Form. This form, when completed entirely, may be given to the election team on the night of your unit election, or may be given or mailed to the Chapter Advisor, who will then forward it the Associate Lodge Advisor of Chapters to be approved by the adult selection committee. This committee consists of the Lodge Advisor, Professional Advisor, and the Council Outdoor Program Chairman. Be sure to keep the PINK copy of the form for yourself.
  5. The troop committee must also attach a letter of recommendation that states why the adult being recommended is a good candidate and how he or she will be a benefit to the Order of the Arrow and to your troop.
  6. Adult forms must be received by the Lodge no later than March 1.

The recommendation process is NOT automatic, so please do not inform the adult that he or she has been recommended. Results of the approval process will be sent to the Chapter in time for tap-outs.

Who should we recommend?

The only reason to recommend an adult is that, by having him or her as a member, the youth of the lodge will benefit. It is not intended as an honor for an adult. We are here for the boys. Therefore, if an adult will serve as an advisor, work to promote the order, provide transportation for the youth, attend events with them and encourage them to attend, and provide resources to the youth, or support them in other ways, he or she is a good candidate for the Order. If not, do not recommend him or her, no matter how much experience he or she may have.

How many adults can we recommend?

This has changed for 2013, more details are available here. The number of adults nominated can be no more than one-third of the number of youth candidates elected, rounded up where the number of youth candidates is not a multiple of three. In addition to the one-third limit, the unit committee may nominate the currently- serving unit leader (but not assistant leaders), as long as he or she has served as unit leader for at least the previous twelve months.

Can we recommend a female scouter?

Absolutely, so long as she meets the requirements listed above, including camping experience and ability to support the Order of the Arrow program.

Can I turn the form in to the Scout Office?

Please don't! The Scout Office handles a tremendous amount of paperwork already, and it is unfortunately quite possible for something to get mislaid. We do not want anyone to miss out on being considered because the form was not discovered until it was too late. Please give the form to the election team on the night of the election, mail it before March 1 to the Tendeuchen Chapter Advisor (e-mail post.1@osu.edu for the current address), or hand it in at the February or March District Roundtable.

How do I get the recommendation form?

Usually you will receive the recommendation form on the night of your unit election. To get the form in advance, come to the Buckeye District Roundtable or to a Tendeuchen chapter meeting and speak with the Chapter Advisor, Paul Post.

The recommendation form is available in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format here. You can preview the form to gather the information you will need, but please use the 3-part carbonless form provided by the election team to actually submit the recommendation.

What if I still have questions?

Please feel free to contact the Tendeuchen Chapter Advisor, Paul Post, at (614) 799-0086 or by e-mail at post.1@osu.edu, or speak to him at Roundtable.
